Edith Nesbitt is so imaginative and her style of writing should be exposed to every kid. I love her long, complex sentences, her rich vocabulary, and her lively voice. The story takes you back into ancient times, but in a very personal way. All five of my kids have loved her books, and especially this one! No childhood would be complete without some Edith Nesbitt! The utopia she envisions is suitable for her turn of the century sort of socialism, but not convincingly viable. I have really enjoyed reading all three of these books. The conversion is pretty good. No missing words or strange characters to speak of. Nesbit is the best : I loved her books when I was a child in the sixties and I love to think that they have been around for over a hundred years and yet they are still wonderful stories that don't feel at all old-fashioned. The world they are set in is certainly different from ours, which adds to their interest, but the writing is immediate and there is nothing mannered or didactic that one might associate with books from Victorian times. A combination of lively, very real children, with sometimes a little magic thrown in and sometimes just the adventures children have when they're not too closely supervised, the books are fast-paced, humorous and adorably wholesome. It's amazing how a story about children from the age of Victoria can still captivate modern kids. It's got magic, mystery, the Psammead ( the "It" from the first of this series, "Five Children and It").
